A vision of next-gen industrial decarbonization: clean energy-powered facilities like Electra’s aim to replace legacy blast furnaces and transform steel’s carbon-heavy footprint.
A Blast Furnace in a Coffee Cup?
On a crisp Colorado morning, engineers at a startup called Electra are producing pure iron metal at just 60 °C – roughly the temperature of a hot cup of coffee. That’s a far cry from the 1,600 °C infernos of a traditional blast furnace. In an industry that has changed little since the dawn of the Industrial Revolution, Electra’s lab setup could be mistaken for a high school chemistry class rather than a steel mill.
